The New “American Dream”: A Healthy Work-Life Balance

Work–life balance is defined as “a concept including proper prioritizing between “work” (career and ambition) and “lifestyle” (health, pleasure, leisure, family and spiritual development/meditation).” A few months back, we sat down with award-winning husband and wife photography team Ben Lowy & Marvi Lacar and chatted about how they are continuously working to achieve the new “american dream”: a healthy work-life balance.

Agency Access: Define what a healthy work/life balance is and how you maintain it as freelance creatives?

Lowy + Lacar: If we actually knew what that looked like, we would probably be super rich by now giving away the secret to that question. It would be disingenuous to say we know how to get there but we do have an idea of what we hope it could mean for our family and our careers.

  1. That we continue doing work that we enjoy and are passionate about
  2. That we make a decent living that enables us to support our family comfortably
  3. That we have the time to enjoy our children. Most of the time, we find that when we are meeting our work goals, our personal goals suffer. We haven’t found that happy medium yet.

AXS: What was the moment that made you realize that you needed to reach out for more help?

LL: The situation became untenable. We just couldn’t meet client deadlines, work on obtaining potential clients with marketing and promotion, pick the kids up on time, and be present parents when they came home. Actually, it was the decision that we wanted to be more present for our boys that started the conversation of forming a team.

AXS: The goal of marketing is to get work. But the goal to get work is having work/life balance. Can you explain how you mix success with your everyday life?  You once have said that you’ve brought your kids on shoots before. How do you make that work?

LL: Success is relative and can mean different things for different people. Our priority is the boys. In the end it goes back to them. How do we support them? How do we educate them about the world? How do we explain to them the importance of grit and passion? I hope they’ll see the answers to those questions in the way we approach our work and in our interactions with them. We are extremely lucky to have discovered a job we enjoy and it is important that the kids understand that. It is also important for us to show the kids what failure can look like. You asked about success earlier but success is really just a string of failures that eventually turned the corner with persistence. So, I suppose if there is a lesson we’d like to teach them, it’s the value of grit and passion.

AXS: What tools do you find to be essential to keeping your marketing on track?

LL: A team. We can’t stress this enough. One person can’t do it all.

AXS: Maintaining a healthy work/life balance is a job within itself. What’s one tip that works for your household?

LL: Like we mentioned before, the idea of a work life balance is elusive but it does help to have a clean and organized home. It sounds funny but really, when everyone understands their roles, the space is neat so that everyone knows where to find everything, we don’t end up wasting our time looking for things or being redundant with tasks. It’s the same rules for our dinner time routine to billing a client. Our boys know when to set the table, where to find the dishes, utensils… They know the steps necessary to finish a job and they’ll either self assign or give each other assignments. Same thing with our office… There are certain steps we take to bill a client. Whoever does it, whether it’s done by us or an assistant or together while in two different countries we’re able to collaborate, find what we need and get it done (almost always) seamlessly (unless there’s no internet connection!)
